It has been recognised for many years that alcohol consumption may occasionally be associated with the development of hypoglycaemia. It is, however, only over the past 15 or 20 years that the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have been elucidated. Moreover, recent work in our department suggests that the occurrence of hypoglycaemia in association with alcohol consumption may be less uncommon than had previously been supposed.
