Lifshitz Points in Ising Systems with Competing Interactions

Abstract

A few years ago, Hornreich, Luban and Shtrikman1 introduced a new multicritical point, the Lifshitz point (L.P.) denoting the triple point between the disordered, uniformly ordered and modulated ordered phases. Lifshitz points have been suggested for a variety of differedt systems including magnetic alloys12, liquid crystals3, TTF-TCNQ4, and perovskites5. Recently, some very interesting experiments on liquid crystals6 and on a structural phase transition7 in Rb Ca F3 have been published.
