An Examination of the Reduction of Client Population in Treatment Programs

  • Gail Shortell

Abstract

About two years ago, Mr. Leon Hunt, Statistician, published through the Drug Abuse Council a lag formula for estimating admissions into heroin programs. Admissions into Anchorage programs though not numerous had been healthy for some time. We were surprised when the formula told us that we might anticipate a tapering off of admissions. Our feeling at the time was that the formula was not appropriate for our needs, or that we had too little data to run an accurate computation. Some time later, the Drug Abuse Council did some consulting in Anchorage; they also ran the formula and came up with substantially the same estimation. And, in fact, experience has borne out the predictions.
