Abstract

In tumor-bearing or stressed hosts, immunologic functions are impaired (2,10,27,28). We have shown that antibody synthesis was altered in traumatic shock (22). The reticuloendothelial system (RES) plays a central role in the physiologic adaptation to this severe stress. Stimulation of RE function protects against the consequences of this stress whereas RE impairment causes a deterioration of the body’s defense against trauma (20).
