In their early years, new technologies such as EFT offer tremendous promises of increased quality of life for consumers. However, when high technologies are adopted on a large scale, they often lead to social problems as small problems magnify to scale. For example, cars were an optional novelty and recreational vehicle in the horse-and-buggy Los Angeles of 1900. Today they dominate the social architecture through freeways which link sprawling suburban tracts, regional shopping centers, and widely scattered workplaces.
