Other Applications of Biofeedback

Abstract

In the three previous chapters, it has been tacitly accepted that it is legitimate to assume that some behaviors are related to the operation of the central nervous system, others to the operation of the autonomic nervous system, and yet others to specific electrical patterns of activity in the brain. This assumption is quite certainly incorrect (as will be seen in the next chapter), but it is not an unreasonable working assumption for the purpose of developing biofeedback training techniques in relation to some of the disabilities which have been considered. There are, however, a fairly large number of disorders to which biofeedback training has been applied which quite clearly cannot be subsumed at present, even on a pragmatic basis, under any of these three categories. In this chapter, the work done so far in relation to these disorders or problem behaviors will be considered. Since no adequate framework within which to place these disorders is currently available, they will be dealt with in alphabetical order. Many of the disorders to be dealt with are in fact of extreme complexity. However, no attempt will be made to provide a complete overview of the etiology and treatment of these disorders. Instead, each will be placed, as far as possible, within a framework which shows why biofeedback training is relevant to the particular disorder. It should be understood, of course, that it is not being suggested that biofeedback training is the only, or even the most relevant, approach to treatment of the particular disorder. In many instances, it will be clear that biofeedback may have only an ancillary or minor role to play in treatment. Nevertheless, that role may be an important one, both in practical terms and, in some cases, in suggesting new approaches to treatment.
