Basic Principles of Continuum Mechanics
Continuum mechanics is the branch of classical mechanics concerned with motions of deformable material bodies. The mathematical model for such a body is called a body manifold which is an oriented 3-dimensional differentiable manifold endowed with global coordinate systems. In this chapter we develop the basic principles governing the motions of body manifolds.
