Abstract

Teoso was shaking off sleep that morning. Even the finer things of life on Easter Island, like the thunderous surf, he could not enjoy this daybreak. And his sleep last night had been fitful, all because of the signs of imminent conflict. Days before, his cousins had gone to join a raiding party with others of his people, the Hanau Momoku. Their enemies, the Hanau Eepe, had attacked a fishing party near the statues along the north coast at Petokura. It had been a small attacking force, more like a mob, and the casualties, a few with wounds from stick weapons, were not serious. But the feeling of crisis was serious.
