Three themes are likely to dominate and challenge the next generation of botanists: food, energy, and the environment. Without doubt, the challenge to increase food production, to improve the distribution of food, to rationalize energy resources, and to protect the environment will require multidisciplinary approaches. These approaches need not be inhibited nor polarized by scientific lines of demarcation nor by geographical boundaries. There is also a universality in the three themes which requires an international approach. It may require as well a reexamination of the definition of botany.
