Techniques for Removing Contaminants from Optical Surfaces

The advent of very high power solid state lasers for fusion research has created a need for extremely clean large optical elements. The contaminants of concern are particles or agglomerations of particles exceeding 1 μm diameter. The primary concern is the elimination of these particulates from optical surfaces before the application of evaporated or sputtered coatings, before the optic is installed into the laser system, and during periodic maintenance.
