Metabolic Factors Affecting Brain Cyclic Nucleotides
Initial investigations of cyclic nucleotides indi cated that they act as second messengers mediating hormonal stimulation (ROBISON et al., 1971). More recently it was recognized that in the central nervous system cyclic nucleotides might play a more general role as modulators of nerve transmission (IVERSEN et al., 1975; MCILWAIN, 1976). Thus changes of cyclic nucleotide levels might significantly affect the function of specific brain structures. In this paper we would like to demonstrate that some drugs affect cyclic nucleotide levels not by changes of neurotransmitter release but by their effects on brain metabolism.
