The Deuteromycetes: (The Fungi Imperfecti)
There are thousands of septate fungi which reproduce only by means of conidia and are not known to have any sexual stages. They cannot be classified along with the other fungi which are grouped according to sexual characteristics. Consequently, an artificial class, the Deuteromycetes, was organized. This group and all taxonomic subdivisions of it are called forms. Thus, there is the form-class Deuteromycetes with form-orders, form-families, and so forth (see also Chapter 15).
