Multimode 3x2 Fiber-Optical Matrix Switch

Abstract

A novel fiber-optic crossbar of modest size has been demonstrated, and a fiber-optic intercom containing six optical data terminals has been matrix-switched by a multimode 3x2 switching array constructed in an 80-μm LiTaO3 plate. Multimode commercial 0.15 NA monofibers have been angle-coupled to the crystal, and electrically controlled optical switching has been obtained under the difficult input condition of unpolarized TE- and TM-mode light (λ = 0.90 μm) launched in the crystal.
