Practice and Problems of Evaluation: A Conference Synthesis

  • Henry W. Riecken

Abstract

The task of the “relator” is to identify some of the major threads of the papers, the critiques and the oral discussion and to try to weave from them a more or less coherent summary of what this conference was all about. I have tried to prepare a mixture of summary and personal reaction to some of the issues that have arisen. This turned out to be a task that resembles what a friend of mine calls “suturing clouds”, for the discussion in these four days has been extremely wide ranging. About a dozen points stand out, however, and will serve well enough as a framework for these concluding comments.
