Elemental Sulfur — New Questions to an Old Problem

What actually is sulfur? Is that a real question? Certainly not if we are content with the answer, trivial today, that it has the simplest stoichiometric composition conceivable — merely a series of atoms of mass number 16. This answer, however, clarifies only the centuries-long arguments about the composition of sulfur, a matter that was connected very intimately with the development of chemistry from ancient times through alchemy to the present day. Nevertheless, this answer is of no further help if we want to know more about the properties of sulfur. Actually, this element presents an extremely complicated chemical system which is still far from understood. According to the external conditions, that system is comprised of sulfur molecules, each containing from two to several hundred thousand atoms mixed together in great variety: Sx (x = 2 to ≈ 106!).
