Structural Investigations of the Peierls Transitions in TTF-TCNQ and Related Compounds (TSEF-TCNQ, HMTTF-TCNQ, NMP-TCNQ)

Abstract

The present Advanced Research Institute is the third meeting of this type dealing from slightly different points of view with one dimensional conductors. If we restrict ourselves to the structural aspects of the Peierls transitions in such 1-D system, a regular progression can be observed through the proceedings of these successive meetings: in 1974, the available results concerned exclusively the case of the platinum chain Krogmann salts (1); in 1976, a series of new investigations (2) allowed a relatively detailed description of the successive phase transitions of TTF-TCNQ (3), which contributed considerably to the understanding of this compound (4). Since then, a number of general reviews (5–7) and a book (8) including a chapter on the structural aspects (9) have been published, so that in the present paper we shall deal exclusively with the most recent results.
