Nursery Rearing of Infant Baboons

The infant baboon (Papio cynocephalus) has proven to be a useful biomedical research model and has been used in a variety of studies. These areas of investigation include nutrition, infectious diseases, toxicology of infant formula preservatives, and diet as it affects the development of atherosclerosis. This increased use of the infant baboon for research has precipitated a need for more expertise in rearing the infants in a nursery environment and collecting baseline data on basic care and normal physiology of the animals. Approximately 100 baboon infants have been successfully reared in a conventional nursery at the Southwest Foundation for Research and Education (SFRE) during the past three years. These animals were offspring of both P. c. anubis and P. c. cynocephalus. Births occurred throughout the year with no significant birth season established. The lack of a birth season has been observed in captive baboons once they acclimated to their environment.
