The Influence of Follicular Fluid on Progesterone Secretion by Porcine Granulosa Cells in Vitro

Follicular fluid, once considered to be an ultrafiltrate of serum, has been found to contain many components which make it a unique biological fluid (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). The contents of follicular fluids have been reported to change with the phases of the estrous or menstrual cycles (8,9,10) and with the size of the follicles (4,11). Recently a number of reports have indicated that components of follicular fluid are capable of influencing the function of granulosa cells (11,12,13,14) oocytes (15) follicular growth initiation (16) whole ovaries (17) the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (18) and Yoshida Ascites cells (19). Many of these observations have been made with fluid from one species and cells of another. Thus, follicular fluid may have numerous important regulatory roles in mammalian reproductive function.
