Abstract

This, the third volume in the Human Behavior and Environment series, brings together contributors identified with the field of environment and behavior with developmental psychologists who have become interested in particular facets of the role of the physical and spatial environment in child behavior. The convergence of these two endeavors is a natural one in several respects. First, the major role of environmental influences on child behavior and development has been stressed consistently in the history of child psychology over the past several decades, as the history of the heredity-environment controversy illustrates. Partly owing to the pervasive influence of S-R reinforcement theory in child psychology in the 1930s and 1940s, which conceptualized environmental influences largely in terms of reward and punishment, and partly because of the natural inclination of social scientists to focus on the influences of parents, peers, school, and culture, the environment was considered almost exclusively in interpersonal and social terms.
