It is less than 20 years that the problem of the separate identity of human and monkey prolactins was posed with the observations of Lyons et al. (1961), extended by Chadwich et al. (1961) and Rivera et al. (1967) that purified human growth hormone (hGH) possessed intrinsic prolactin (PRL) bioactivity. Since then as a result of an impressive series of biochemical, biological and clinical studies and the development of heterologous and homologous radioimmunoassays of human prolactin in plasma, the concept has emerged that human and monkey prolactins exist as separate peptides in the anterior pituitary (AP) gland and that are released by stimuli different from those causing GH release, although both are released in stress (see Pasteels and Robyn, 1973; Bohnet and Friesen, 1976; Clemens, 1976; Pecile and Müller, 1972, 1976). Determination of the entire amino acid sequence of hPRL has revealed that it bears very little identity with hGH (Shome and Parlow, 1977).
