Part of the Published Nobel Symposia book series (NOFS, volume 42)

The Nobel Symposia, of which this is number 42, were started in 1965 with a symposium on “Muscular Afferents and Motor Control.” Over the years, it has become a tradition to organize Nobel Symposia differently from the usual congresses so that more time is devoted to exchange of ideas and concepts than to presentation of data. Also, by tradition, there are certain prerequisites to be met in planning a Nobel Symposium: the area of research to be discussed should be of immediate interest; the “state of the arts” in the particular area should have developed to a level that makes it appropriate and necessary to have mutual exchange among the scientists involved; the organizers should have special expertise in the field. We believe that this Symposium meets these requirements.
