Selective Reductions Using Metal Hydrides

Abstract

A discussion of selective reductions is very appropriate at a symposium honoring Professor Herbert C. Brown for his contributions to chemistry. Dr. Brown’s Ph.D. thesis (under the direction of Professor H. I. Schlesinger) involved a study of the reduction of aldehydes and ketones by diborane.1 This was the first application of the use of a boron hydride for the reduction of organic compounds. It was during this period, too, that Professor Schlesinger and his coworkers at the University of Chicago discovered both sodium borohydride2 and lithium aluminum hydride (LAH).3
