Abstract
The mechanical reliability of monolithic refractory concrete linings for use in coal gasification process vessels must be improved if long life (>5 yrs) is to be achieved. High alumina (50–90+% Al2O3) and low silica and iron calcium aliminate bonded dense and insulating castables have a strong tendency to cracky shrink and spall during initial dry-out, heat-up and subsequent cool-down. Various parameters used in the installation of these linings and the critical nature of the processing steps during mixing, casting, curing and heat-up have a significant effect on the extent of phases developed, cracking and even explosive spalling of the material. This paper reviews how the thermomechanical degradation of dual component linings can be related to properties resulting from these processing variables.
