Strengthening of Lime-Stabilized Zirconia by Post Sintering Heat Treatments

Abstract

Two-phase ceramics formed from zirconia (ZrO2) and moderate quantities (usually less than 15 mol%) of stabilizing oxides such as CaO, MgO or Y2O3 are known as partially-stabilized zirconia (PSZ). The matrix phase has a cubic, fluorite structure and is a solid solution of the stabilizer and zirconia. The dispersed phase has the structure of either the low or the intermediate temperature polymorph of zirconia, which have monoclinic and tetragonal symmetry, respectively. The stabilizer used in the present work was lime (CaO). The relevant part of the working phase diagram is given in Fig.1
