Some Considerations in the State of the Art in Processing Crystalline Ceramics

Abstract

During the race for the moon in the 1960’s it became readily apparent that the engineering properties of materials were critical to the development of space flight systems. In this period Government agencies, such as the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), developed sophisticated systems approaches to achieve the ultimate goal of manned space flight. From these systems came the realization that more reliable materials had to be developed with more carefully controlled physical properties. The three classes of materials; metals, polymers and ceramics were reassessed for possible utilization in space systems. Ceramic materials because of their unique properties thus became a target for the most intense study to date. Though many ceramic processing techniques had already been developed industrially they were reexamined to determine what variations in raw materials and processing could produce a more useful material.
