Energy Levels and Transitions of Transition Metal Ions in Solids
In this chapter we shall be concerned with the optical properties of transition metal ions which occur as dilute impurities in optically inert inorganic host materials. We shall review the electronic level structure and optical transitions of the transition metal ions. We shall see how the optical properties vary when the ion is placed in different crystal environments, and we shall be interested in particular in the effect of the vibrating lattice on the optical properties of the transition metal ions.
