T-Cell Regulation of Murine Iga Biosynthesis

Regulation of the immune response has been a subject of much recent interest. In this regard it has been shown that both T-cells and macrophages as well as humoral substances derived from such cells can both help or suppress B-cell responses (1,2). In the case of T-cells, help or suppression is mediated by separate subpopulations which are identifiable in mice by characteristic surface markers (Ly antigens) (3) and which can be separated from one another by velocity sedimentation (4). Moreover, mitogenic stimulation of unseparated T-cell populations results in differential effects on suppressor or helper function depending on the kind and the dose of mitogen used: Concanavalin A (Con A) at mitogenic doses induces net suppression of B-cell responses and at submitogenic doses induces net help of B-cell responses; on the other hand, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) appears to induce only suppression of B-cell responses (5,6).
