Valence Instabilities of Rare Earth Ions in Metals

Abstract

Rare earth ions are capable of producing “Kondo-like” anomalies in the physical properties of both concentrated and dilute rare earth metallic systems which are qualitatively similar. The anomalies can be viewed as originating from the hybridization localized 4f electron states and extended states of the conduction band as a result of the unstable valence of certain rare earth Ions. The physical properties of a concentrated and a dilute rare earth metallic system which exemplify Kondo-like behavior, SmS in its collapsed metallic phase and (LaSm)Sn3, respectively, are briefly reviewed.
