Pressure Induced Spin-Glass→Single-Impurity Transition in LaCe, Superconductivity in LaCe and YCe under Pressure

Abstract

The results of high pressure electrical resistivity measurements on classical spin-glass systems such as AuFe, CuMn, and AuMn are briefly reviewed. It is shown how such studies give information about the nature of the interactions leading to the well known spin-glass freezing phenomena at a temperature TO. LaCe, at dilute Ce concentrations a Kondo system, shows typical spin-glass behavior in the resistivity above 1K for 10–40% Ce. Upon application of moderate pressures (10–20 kbar) this system undergoes an apparent spin-glass→hsingle-impurity transition as predicted by Larsen and Doniach. Whereas the superconducting transition temperature TC is less than in pure La or Ce at all pressures, for Y .6Ce.4 TC=1.6K for 50 kbar and TC=2.7K for 110 kbar, values which are higher at those pressures than in either Y or Ce alone.
