Non-Invasive Measurements of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Patients with Cerebrovascular Disorders
The recently developed 133Xe inhalation method (3, 7, 8) has certain advantages compared to the carotid injection method which may be listed as in Table I. The method is noninvasive for measuring regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), with little or no discomfort to patients or volunteers during the measurement. Serial measurements of rCBF may thus be correlated with the clinical condition of the patient as well as with other diagnostic tests, such as computer-assisted tomography and the EEG. Regional blood flow measurements may be made within the vertebrobasilar arterial distribution by means of a special helmet with placement of detectors over the brainstem and cerebellum (4), as well as over both cerebral hemispheres in the carotid arterial distribution. These advantages of the 133Xe inhalation method are particularly useful in the clinical investigation of cerebrovascular disease in both carotid and vertebrobasilar arterial territories.
