The first and most obvious answer is that one cannot ignore major natural disasters. People who have suffered their effects may at first be simply bewildered, but some are bound to ask what has happened to them, and whether it can happen again. The science of seismology therefore begins with the classification of the phenomena, the construction of historical catalogues, the delineation of the most active regions of the world and the establishment of a basis for estimating the likelihood of recurance at any given place.
