We are concerned with “what is applied mathematics?” and not “how to apply mathematics.” In universities, there are many courses that deal with the latter question, and whenever possible we will take advantage of this to refer to their content. Our initial answer is that applied mathematics is the vocational use of mathematics other than in teaching or mathematical research, and we will explore the intellectual developments that are associated with such vocational uses, with emphasis on the aspects not normally part of the “how to” courses.
