Abstract

Recent developments in the chemistry and function of membranes have been of particular interest to immunologists because of the primary events of the immune response (antigen recognition) as well as other immune phenomenon e.g. complement binding, allergic reactions, phagocytosis, etc. occur at the cell surface. The largest constituent of most cell membranes is protein and undoubtedly the composition, conformation and organization of this protein determines membrane function. A wide variety of proteins of the lymphocyte membrane has been described, usually in functional e.g. histo-compatible or immune response (Ia) antigens, Fc receptor, complement receptor, rather than in physicochemical terms. Probably the most thoroughly characterized of the membrane-associated proteins are the immunoglobulins (Ig) and β2-microglobulin (β2m).
