Genetic markers including red cell antigens, serum protein allotypes and various enzyme systems have been employed and found to be powerful tools for ethnic and anthropologic studies (1,5,7, 10,11). The HL-A system with its extensive polymorphism has been recently recognized as one of the most helpful and promising genetic systems. As a result, several investigators have used the HL-A system in the study of the genetic relationship between various living ethnic groups. Also, recently Stastny (11) reported on the distribution of the antigens belonging to this system in 33 mummified tissues.
