Assessment of Cerebral Oxygenation VIA the Conjunctiva
The first membrane-covered Polarographic cell was introduced by Clark (1956) and since that time many refinements in oxygen polarography have occurred. As a result accurate measurements can now be made in a great variety of situations. Nevertheless, continuous on line assessment of arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) has not yet been realised. A method of performing this is particularly needed in the operating theatre or in situations, such as the intensive care unit, where the critically ill patient is being treated. The technique should preferably be non-invasive and apparatus should be simple and robust enough to be used by technicians and nursing staff alike.
