Abstract

Cerami and Manning showed that cyanate inhibits the sickling of red blood cells from patients with sickle cell anemia and suggested its use in the treatment of this disease (1). They further showed that cyanate had no deleterious effects upon red cell metabolism (2) and that cells exposed to this compound in vitro and reinfused into the patient had a prolonged survival (3). These observations have stimulated considerable research into the biochemistry and pharmacology of cyanate and the mechanism by which it inhibits sickling.
