Abstract

Since the initial descriptions by BENEDICT (4) and BLOOM (5), several other reports on fasting as an introduction to the treatment of severe obesity have been made (8,22,28,29). Examples of acute gout (9,29), urate nephrolithiasis (9,14) and renal insufficiency (14) are reported. In order to prevent such complications during fasting, medicamentous treatment seems to be necessary to reduce urate synthesis or — on the other hand — to increase the renal clearance of uric acid.
