Spontaneous Oscillations of PO2 in Muscle Tissue

Abstract

Oxygen pressure in muscle tissue shows a distribution related to capillaries, metabolic requirements and the technique of measurement as it has been shown by KUNZE (1966, 1969), WHALEN (1967, 1970), VAN LIEW (1973). From these measurements a mean PO2 can be calculated and mean values of about 38mmHg have been found in the resting human tib.ant.muscle by different techniques. Spontaneous fluctuations are to be seen in most of the intramuscular PO2-tracings but in most cases these fluctuations seem to be inconstant and there is the question whether they could be artefacts perhaps caused by contractions of muscle fibres. So it is the question whether they are a physiological phenomenon and if this is right it should be taken into account for the concept of a mean oxygen pressure of muscle tissue.
