Genetic Control of Immune Responses in Chickens

Abstract

Those of us who are fond of dinosaurs were happy to learn that “dinosaurs are not extinct” (1), and those of us who are fond of birds had new meaning given to our work when Bakker (1) reported that “the colorful and successful diversity of living birds is a continuing expression of basic dinosaur biology”. Based on bioenergetic and anatomical evidence Bakker proposes that mammals inherited their “warm-bloodedness” (endothermy) from therapsids and that birds inherited their endothermy from dinosaurs. This new classification of the class Aves makes it especially interesting to know the extent to which the structural and biological properties of the immunoglobulins, and the immune response (Ir) control mechanisms, have been conserved and have diverged in the mammalian and avian evolutionary branches.
