Immunologic Significance of Specificities of Cellular Agglutinins of Limulus Polyphemus

From the earliest investigations of blood group antigens, plant extracts (lectins) were found with hemagglutinating ability. The hemolymph of selected invertebrate animal species were found to contain agglutinins for a variety of animal cells and specificity for human erythrocyte blood groups.
