Phylogenetic Aspects of Hypersensitivity: Immediate Hypersensitivity Reactions in Flatfish

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 64))

Abstract

The existence of immediate hypersensitivity reactions in poikilotherms has, for many years, been controversial. Dreyer and King1 reported that systemic anaphylaxis was induced in goldfish, perch, rock bass and sunfish following the injection of horse serum. Later studies2,3 failed to support this claim but anaphylaxis has recently been reported in frogs injected with Salmonella typhosa 4.
