Mitogens as Probes for Studying Temperature Effects on the Development of Immunocompetent Cells in Poikilothermic Vertebrates

Abstract

Vertebrate physiological processes take place over a limited temperature range. With the poikilothermic vertebrates (fishes, amphibians and reptiles), their internal body temperature is closely linked to the environmental temperature with little regulation possible. In general, within the thermal tolerance limits of the organism, low temperatures depress, delay or inhibit antibody synthesis and increase allograft survival times whereas high temperatures increase or accelerate antibody synthesis and decrease allograft survival times (1–4).
