Planning the Type II Coronary Primary Prevention Trial of the Lipid Research Clinics (U. S. A.)
One of the important potential functions for an organized system of cooperating lipid research clinics is to serve as a framework for large-scale intervention studies, studies beyond the scope of any individual clinic. The Lipid Research Clinics in the United States, sponsored by the National Heart and Lung Institute, are already embarked on such a large-scale study and the experience gained in the planning stages may be helpful to other groups contemplating related studies. My purpose today is to share with you some examples of the problems that were encountered rather than attempt a complete review of that study. This is the report not of an epidemiologist but a physician and it will be more anecdotal than analytical.
