Pathogenesis of Hyperlipidemias, Clues to Treatment?

Other papers presented at this Symposium have dealt with specific recent developments in treatment of hyperlipidemia by dietary, pharmacologic and surgical intervention. There continues to be a high level of interest and research activity in these areas. What we would like to do today is to present a speculative discussion of where we may be heading with regard to modes of intervention, pharmacologic and otherwise. There have been rapid and impressive advances in recent years in our understanding of lipoprotein structure, lipoprotein metabolism and of the enzymes involved in the latter. Do these new findings inform us with regard to new opportunities in the management of hyperlipidemia?
