The Insect Chorion: Programmed Expression of Specific Genes during Differentiation

The essence of differentiation is differential gene expression. Different cell types in a multicellular organism are different in that they express different sets of genes—muscle cells the battery of genes coding for muscle proteins, pancreatic cells the battery of genes coding for digestive enzymes, etc. Gene expression is usually monitored by the rate of synthesis of the corresponding protein, although other indices may also be used (e.g., rate of specific mRNA synthesis, accumulation of specific mRNA or protein, etc.). The differential gene expression which marks development has the following distinctive features.
