Until recently, biology was a science which dealt mainly with observation and description of living forms. Less than twenty years ago a profound revolution occurred which transformed it into a powerful theoretical science as well. This new theoretical base has enormously extended the scope of biology’s operations and its ability to understand, predict and control phenomena at many different levels. The new understanding of the nature of the living process came about from the contributions from three different kinds of fields, genetics, biochemistry and microbiology.
