Abstract

The RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (replicases) of the small RNA animal viruses which belong to the picornavirus group (polio, mengo, encephalomyocarditìs, etc.) were discovered about ten years ago (1). They were found in the cytoplasm of infected cells, bound to relatively large structures, sedimentìng between 200 to 300 S. The enzyme is associated with a double-stranded RNA template — a duplex made of a parental viral RNA strand and its complementary strand. It is the complementary (-) strand of the duplex which serves as template for the transcription of molecules of progeny viral RNA which are then incorporated into virions.
