Calcification Processes in Atherosclerosis

In atherosclerotic aortas, there are marked changes in the structure of smooth muscle cells and elastic tissue in addition to other intimai changes such as the focal accumulation of lipids, mucopolysaccharides, blood, and blood products. These changes are observed predominantly in the subendothelial space, around the internal elastic lamina, as well as in the media.
