Observations on the Prevalence of the Signs and Symptoms Associated with Withdrawal During Continuous Observation of Experimental Intoxication and Withdrawal in Humans

Abstract

The clinical study by Victor and Adams (1953) and the experimental studies of intoxication and withdrawal in humans by Isbell and his coworkers (1955), by Mendelson (1964) and by Mello (1972) have clearly established the importance of withdrawal in producing the signs and symptoms of the clinical picture associated with delirium tremens and related states (which are now recognized as manifestations of the withdrawal syndrome). The experimental studies also demonstrated that, even during the drinking period, many of these signs and symptoms appeared. The nature of the partial withdrawal and its relation to total withdrawal require clarification.
