Standardized Bleeding Time in the Study of Drugs Interfering with Platelet Function

The bleeding time measures the ability of platelets to function normally in the first step of hemostasis. When vessels are injured, platelets adhere to exposed collagen fibers and then to each other to form the primary hemostatic plug, which stops bleeding from the small vessels cut in performing the bleeding time test. The bleeding time is prolonged in cases with marked thrombocytopenia, and in various pathological conditions, either hereditary or acquired, characterized by abnormal platelet function.
